Ceramics
is a combination of masculine strenght with a feminine touch.
Pottery
making is a long, meditative process transforming dirt into crisp polished
artefacts.
I
am fascinated by the romantic visions of William Morris (1834-1896)
and the Arts and Crafts movement, where a return to craftsmanship
was seen as a salvation from industrialization and slavery to machines.
It may seem strange to quote this era as inspirational over hundred
years later,
but little has changed ever since, and the issue of hand or machine
made is still of great concern.
Today, the term 'hand crafted' is applied to objects made in very poor
countries
by unqualified labour force, sometimes children, working often in bad
conditions for very low salaries.
I disapprove of this new form of slavery and make all my ceramics myself
in my Zürich's studio.
This enables me to create unique art pieces, instead of the disposable
pottery mostly available today.
